The game features a host of new modes and settings which radically alter the gameplay experience: "Arcade Mode" consists of 61 Rounds divided into left and right versions with two types of boss characters appearing in the last Round; "VS Mode" lets players face off against a friend or the CPU; and the unfailingly frantic "Time Mode" challenges players to clear Rounds within a strict time limit. Factor in the subtle differences arising from the choice of "Lives" or "Barrier" rules, along with a plethora of exciting items, and it's clear you're in for hours of blockbusting fun!

If you were a fan of Bit.Trip: Beat, Core is another awesome package that’ll last you a few good hours for a slim 600 point price. The music is a bit too predictable this time around, still using standard 4:4 beats and little more than quarter, eighth, or sixteenth notes to vary things up, but every once in a while the game will throw you for a bit more of a loop. The boss areas, challenges (which require you to turn your controller around to orient the d-pad differently), black and white danger zones, combo system, and visual style all rock. What it really comes down to is a gameplay design that just isn’t quite as compelling as the tilt-to-move Pong-based game in Beat, and some simple music. For 600 points it’s still a steal for any retro gaming or music fan, but I would have been just as happy with more Beat songs for the same price. Core is fun, original, and downright trippy; it just doesn’t bring too much innovation to the overall Bit.Trip family.

I'm a Mr. Driller fan, but this version is a little hard to recommend because of its shallow depth. It only takes a few minutes to complete each stage, and with a mere seven on offer there's around a half hour of gameplay here. You could spend time improving your scores and times, but without online leaderboards no one will know what an amazing Driller you are (it is becoming less and less acceptable for games not to include this basic feature). There is also no multiplayer mode – disappointing, since other Mr. Driller games include it. If you've never played this arcade action game it might be worth a download to see why it's been popular for a decade. But the previously anointed probably don't need another version with fewer features

Gradius ReBirth was a bit too short and easy compared to previous Gradius games (especially because previous games in the series already were pretty short), but with Contra ReBirth, Konami has struck the balance just right: there's only five levels, but they're all decently sized and quite challening to get through. Once you think you've perfected your skills, you can try and see if you can make it through Nightmare mode, and of course, 2-player mode is always fun. For just 1000 Wii Points this is really a great deal and proof that Konami still has what it takes to make a good Contra game of their own.

Solomon's Key is a platform game with both action and strategy elements. On each level your goal is to retrieve a key which can then be used to unlock the exit. To help out, you have a magic wand which can be used to create and destroy blocks (though some blocks can't be destroyed). In order to reach the key you will need carefully to arrange the blocks on the screen so you can jump your way around safely.

Wandering around each level are a variety of enemies which will cause you to lose a life if you're caught. Some creatures can be killed by destroying the block they are standing on, others must be dodged. Hidden bonuses and magic can be found on many of the levels, sometimes even hidden in blocks. Some treasures give you bonus points, others can form magic spells to help deal with the enemies. To make the game more difficult, each level has a time limit in which it must be completed..

It's actually a bit surprising to me that Super Star Wars has retained the popularity it has over the years, because I'd think most gamers who got their hands on the original SNES cartridge in the '90s would have been frustrated to the point of not wanting to return to it -- but there must be a strong following of hardcore players who mastered the challenge nonetheless, or else nostalgia's pulling a Jedi mind trick, because the reaction to LucasArts' announcement that this game and its two sequels were headed to the Virtual Console seems to have been met with nothing but universal praise and acceptance. Maybe the Star Wars fanbase really is just that strong.

But use caution in your decision-making before you take the plunge -- an investment of 800 Wii Points is perfectly valid for this design, which still offers intense and explosive action in the galaxy far, far away even 17 years after its original release. But it really is incredibly, frustratingly challenging on any difficult setting other than Easy, and its version of the Star Wars story is only loosely in line with what you've seen through your Special Edition DVD. (Unless you somehow scored the incredibly rare Luke-slaughters-the-Jawas extra extended version.)

It’s hard to see why someone who already owns the Mega Drive / Genesis version would want to download this – unless of course they’re a massive Golden Axe fan. However, if you’ve not purchased Golden Axe in any form on the Virtual Console yet, then this is worth considering. You’ll miss out on the bonus levels that were featured in the home version and it costs 100 more Wii Points, but you get the added benefit of improved visuals and sound – as well as that fantastic ending. Ultimately, the differences between this and the 16-bit release are negligible; both offer plenty of “hack and slash” gratification and both feature a brilliant two-player co-op mode. Which one you decide to purchase is really down to your own personal preference.

You, Me and Cubes (1000 Points) *2 Spieler*

http://wiimedia.ign.com/wii/image/article/102/1026748/FirstInline_1253568891.jpg
Since the introduction of the WiiWare digital distribution model, Nintendo has published a handful of impressive puzzlers under the first-party banner -- Maboshi's Arcade, Art Style: Orbient, Cubello and Rotohex have each arrived and set a strong precedent for quirky, inventive and visually distinct puzzling action on the service. You, Me & The Cubes is the latest addition to this lineup, and it may well be the best of the bunch thus far.

The core concept is immediately engaging, but the game doesn't restrict itself to just the limits of its original idea -- it expands upon the initial gameplay of just placing your little pseudo-humans in balanced positions on floating cubes, and introduces depth-building additional elements like enemies, surfaces with altered properties and co-operative play. What results is a 10 dollar download that works wonderfully both as a thoughtful escape for a single player, and also as a frantic new Nintendo way to partner with (or fight against) a friend.

And you've got to love the Fallos. There may have never been a more pitiable virtual people than these poor souls, forever doomed to live in constant fear of death by spinning cube.

As is the case with most multi-part games and stories, Chapter 2 of Tales of Monkey Island doesn't really do much interesting stuff in terms of story progression. It plays exactly the same as the first chapter, just with different puzzles, so if you enjoyed that, you'll most certainly enjoy this. Sadly, the game loses a point as it once again has annoying audio and visual hiccups; something which should not be allowed to happen. Please look for an acceptable solution for the next chapter, Telltale!

There's definitely nothing else like Sexy Poker on WiiWare. Sure, there's Texas Hold 'em Tournament, but that's one of the ugliest games available on the service and it doesn't have cute, scantily clad anime girls. It does have multiplayer, though, which Sexy Poker lacks and has very limited replay value because of it.

Ultimately, two types of people will get a kick out of Sexy Poker: adolescents who get a genuine thrill out of half-naked anime chicks, and people like me who will download it as a joke because of how bat crap crazy it is. Either way: enjoy!

Back in its day this was one of the better Master System games, but the dumbed down graphics and serious sprite-flickering do not make this a viable option anymore. At the time it was really impressive considering the limitations of the Master System’s hardware, but when casting nostalgia aside there is no easy way to recommend this unless you are particularly curious to see the secret bonus level. With lots of excellent and unique games such as Psycho Fox yet unreleased on the Virtual Console, we would recommend that Sega concentrated on releasing them instead.

But just remember my word of warning -- Super Empire Strikes Back is an incredibly difficult experience. Even given the new Force powers and other enhanced abilities for the hero characters, Super Empire's levels are relentless. The screen is constantly awash with tons of foes, pit traps will claim your lives regularly after even slightly misplaced jumps, and bosses often have so many hit points and absorb so much damage that you can hardly ever hope to survive long enough to take them down before losing the battle of attrition with your own health meter.

There are three different difficulty settings -- "Easy," "Brave," and "Jedi" -- but even the lowest level of challenge is still higher than other games' toughest tracks in this same genre. You could spend the eight dollars to download this one and then, very possibly, not make it past the first few stages. You might never get off Hoth. Like me. In the '90s.

So I'd recommend first getting Super Star Wars, trying it out, and seeing if you can handle its intensity. Then, if you feel like you've mastered its ways, consider progressing further up the difficulty curve with this sequel. All just things to keep in mind. And if you do decide to buy, well, good luck -- and may the Force be with you.

After such a special debut, few would have doubted that a LostWinds sequel was going to be anything but superb. Despite the fact that most of us would have been happy with more of the same, Frontier has listened to feedback and improved the game's technical sheen, visual variety and expanded the game world. That would be applauded in itself - however, Frontier has also enhanced the core game with new abilities and the brilliant season-switching mechanic, fleshing out Winter of the Melodias in some style. With satisfyingly challenging puzzles expertly woven between engaging platforming and a thoroughly charming narrative, Winter of the Melodias represents an essential purchase. It's not simply the best WiiWare title on the market, but one of the best Wii games full stop.

Make no mistake this game will provide you with classic arcade brawling fun, especially if playing with a friend, but the feeling of déjà vu is strong. There’s a different, visually interesting, setting and two of the playable characters are new but it’s just too similar to its arcade predecessor. Had Capcom mixed things up a bit this could have been better and whilst for some the two-player option will make this more appealing than the Final Fight that's already available to Wii owners, it may be worth waiting to see what Capcom has planned for the VC Arcade. Because with the disappointing bosses Final Fight 2 is ultimately Final Fight 1 – just not as good.

Protothea is a totally hardcore shooter that, while challenging, just isn't very interesting. The one unique aspect is its control scheme, but I can't say it's an improvement over two analog sticks. The game doesn't look that great, doesn't sound that great, and doesn't offer much creativity. If you consider yourself a hardcore shooter fan you might want to take a look, if only to check out the IR controls. But there are much better shooters on the Wii.

Picturebook Games: Pop-Up Pursuit is essentially Candyland for WiiWare. That's not necessarily praise -- although Candyland is enjoyed by pretty much every kid in America, it's because the game requires zero skill and is so simple a four-year old can wrap their mind around it. If you have young kids, this will amuse them for a while. But Nintendo missed the opportunity to make Pop-Up Pursuit something the whole family can enjoy, like Mario Party.

If you like quick-blast games where you compete with friends for the best high-score then this is the game for you. On the exterior Ghost Mansion Party seems like a good idea: the spooky theme of the game makes it enticing to those who love to get into the holiday spirit and a party game atmosphere easily lends itself to the task, but choosing to use many of the same mini-game ideas that have already been done many times over on the Wii console ends up making the game feel stale and unimaginative. Ghost Party Mansion's sloppy play control and recycled mini-game ideas end up making the title feel more tedious than fun and ultimately overshadow the game's well-executed haunted house theme.

Yep, Zombies Ate My Neighbors really is that good. This is one of those cult classics that absolutely deserves its accolades, and is certainly worth your investment of just 800 Wii Points to download in Virtual Console form. It's not a perfect game, but any negative points are minor, counterbalanced by thoughtful design, and can't compared to its positives -- running and gunning through crazed neighborhoods, with a friend, killing zombies and wolfmen and plant monsters with popsicles is just too unique and novel an experience to pass up. Grab this one soon, and have a happy, zombie-hunting Halloween.

And, as a final note, the revisions made to the text after the first run of this review haven't altered the score assigned below -- Zombies Ate My Neighbors was already named Impressive and given an Editor's Choice award. And if that's not enough to convince you to get surfing to the Wii Shop, here are some parting words from our own ZAMN superfan, Mark Bozon.

In terms of gameplay, chapter 3 of Tales of Monkey Island is obviously not much different from the previous games. There are some fun puzzles included, but they're still nothing more than figuring out what object to use with what other object. This episode is easily the best yet in terms of humour though, Murray alone makes this absolutely hilarious and is guaranteed to satisfy any fan of the old Monkey Island games. Yes, the audio and visual hiccups are still present, but by this point, we really don't expect Telltale to do anything this annoyance in the WiiWare version anymore.

There's certainly no denying the significance and history that comes along with being the predecessor to the legendary Street Fighter 2 release, but even with all of that going for it, there's still far too many faults in this game to warrant any type of serious consideration for fighting game fans. Unless you just have to experience the first Street Fighter title for yourself, you'd be much better suited to check out one of the many outstanding fighting titles already available on the Virtual Console service and leave this classic fighting game and its historical significance in the annals of video game history where it belongs.

In a world where every third-party game that uses the Balance Board is just a marble rolling challenge, Rock ‘n Roll Climber is a refreshingly creative idea. This Nintendo first-party title isn’t an instant classic by any means, but it has its charm in an awkward sort of way. It is also a pretty decent workout: I can’t wait to see if I wake up sore after playing this game for several hours today.

I liked Pokemon Rumble when I started. It was mindless, but it was fun, and playing with other people made it better. But as I progressed through each rank and saw the same levels, and then the same Pokemon, the experience plummeted pretty fast. If you're a pretty big Pokemaniac with a lot of friends (oxymoron, I know), then Pokemon Rumble might keep you entertained enough for a purchase. But note that I'm a pretty big Pokemon nut and even I got bored well before this game was even halfway done. There's just not enough depth to the game to make it interesting to the older Pokemon fans, or really anyone that doesn't squeal excitedly when they see a Pikachu. Honestly I recommend the free downloadable demo since you get most of the experience right there, and it's cheap as free.

Shootanto: Evolutionary Mayhem has a wonderfully insane concept and theme, wrapped around some really mindless shoot-it-all gameplay -- so while it won't win you over on the merits of how it plays, it might just be crazy enough in story and presentation to earn your investment of 500 Wii Points. Hudson Entertainment seems pretty proud of its little story of monkeys-versus-lizardmen, too, because a sequel to Shootanto has already made it out of the gates in Japan -- and since this one came across the ocean, we can bet that one will too.

My trigger finger will need to rest a bit, though, before Shootanto 2.

Dragon Master Spell Caster is another of the many "learning the ropes" releases for a small studio testing the waters of Wii development -- the kind of game where lots of mistakes are made, and, hopefully, lots of lessons are learned. This one had an ambitious concept, but the execution just failed miserably. And I wonder if Stickmen Studios knew that, in the end, and just allowed it to go out the door and die.

In any event, this is a game that's absolutely best left ignored by everyone. One of the worst of 2009, and rightfully used as nothing more than filler for a week headlined by much more worthy releases from established, major publishers. Do go anywhere near Dragon Master. Let it die.

Whilst Shanghai II was a great game on home computers when it appeared, attempting to shoehorn a mouse-driven computer game onto a gaming console wasn't really a great idea back in 1991 let alone today. If you don't have a Japanese Wii to take advantage of the excellent disc or WiiWare versions from Sunsoft, then you may want to exercise some patience and wait for a possible WiiWare release; you can always play it on the web while you wait!

GameOn have presented fans of mahjong solitaire with a pretty good collection of game patterns and a nice interface to go with it - it's definitely a better option than Shanghai II: Dragon's Eye for the Mega Drive. Lack of 480p display with higher-resolution tile images and wonky linkage of camera to pointer movement mar what would otherwise be a solid recommendation. If you're a big fan of Shanghai or mahjong solitaire games, then you'll certainly be able to play and enjoy this game, but if you can import Wii games you're better off spending a bit extra for the better experience offered by Sunsoft's superior Shanghai games.

The game tries very hard to be better than its predecessor, but at times it just feels like it tries too hard. The graphics and music are once again excellent, but the gameplay varies greatly - the standard platforming levels are still brilliant, but the gimmick levels are for the most part incredibly annoying, and it's likely that you will absolutely hate them. All in all it's still a quality game, but you'll most likely not enjoy it as much as the original.

There's been nothing wrong with the gameplay in the series so far, and obviously nothing changes here. The puzzles aren't really too hard to figure out if you pay attention to what the characters say, meaning you should once again plow through the whole thing in about 2 to 3 hours. Be warned: the plot twist at the end is so big, that there's absolutely no way you don't want chapter 5!
