AW: Der große Virtual Console / Wii Ware Übersichtsthread (zu Genres, Preisen, und Wertungen)

    Überblick für diese Woche

2 neue Spiele für Wii Ware

Pirates: The Key of Dreams - Action - keine ign-Wertung - (1000 Points)

Pirates: The Key of Dreams is really a mixed bag. If you're looking for a single player game, you will come away severely disappointed. It's just not long enough to warrant the high price tag of 1000 Wii Points, it’s too repetitive, short lived and there is no reason to go back to it. If you're looking for a multiplayer game, then the battle mode is actually relatively decent, especially if you turn the turbo mode on to make everything go super fast. Overall, Pirates doesn't really sink, but it only just manages to swim! We recommend you save your pieces of eight for something better.

    SPOGS Racing - Racing - 1.9 ! - (1000 Points)

This is as bad as it gets. SPOGS Racing is ugly, boring, and sports some of the worst racing AI ever. It's an absolute joke that D2C is charging money for this. SPOGS looks like someone's first go at homebrew developing. There is no excuse for this to be on WiiWare, standing alongside the likes of LostWinds and Final Fantasy: My Life as a King. There are much better racers (even better budget racers) on the Wii.

    C64

International Karate + - Fighting - keine ign Wertung - (500 Points) *TOPHIT*

Taking an already good game and adding an extra fighter was a stroke of genius, and results in an exceptionally playable game. Ideal for a quick tournament with your friends, or a longer session of trying to improve your rank, this is a must purchase if you are hankering for a beat-em-up that requires a decent amount of skill, rather than how fast you can push a sequence of buttons.

    NeoGeo

    Neo Turf Masters - Sport - keine ign-Wertung - (900 Points)

If you're a video game golf fan that's been desperately searching for a golf fix on the Virtual Console, Neo Turf Masters is a game you should at least check out. It's certainly not on a level with a Hot Shots Golf or Mario Golf title, but it's a nice trip back to the 16-bit era of gaming where golf simulations were just beginning to become more popular and playable. This game lacks some of the serious simulation elements found in more realistic offerings, but if you're just looking for a fun arcade-style golfing experience without a lot of bells and whistles, Neo Turf Masters might be just the game you've been waiting for.

    City Connection - Arcade - 5.0 - (500 Points)

After last week’s disappointing single offering, it’s encouraging to see the Virtual Console getting back up to speed with two stronger releases this week. City Connection isn’t exactly the quality of game we were hoping for, but it is a step up from Sky Kid and could be entertaining for a niche audience – and if its release is a sign that the VC games will slowly be getting better now over the weeks ahead, we can be satisfied with it for now.

    Diese Woche neu:

    Wii Ware

    Defend Your Castle - Action - 7.9 - (500 Points)

Defend Your Castle is a fun WiiWare game and a perfect example of what the service can bring to Wii owners. Namely, seemingly shallow pick-up-and-play experiences with hidden depth. XGen Studios' project features only a handful of basic play mechanics -- primarily, the ability to grab villagers and toss them around -- but it's frantic, occasionally strategic, and fun, particularly as a multiplayer game. It's also a deal at only 500 Wii Points. The big problem is that you will inevitably tire of the single challenge, even with the bells and whistles surrounding it. And, of course, there's the fact that a similar experience can be had for free on your Internet browser.

Wild West Guns - Arcade - keine Wertung - (1000 Points)

Gameloft has crafted an addictive and attractive game with enough gameplay to keep you coming back for short blasts every once in a while, but there's not really enough meat on the bones to hold your attention for prolonged play sessions. There's little doubt that more modes, environments and enemies could have made Wild West Guns an essential purchase but overall what’s on offer for 1,000 points is a very well executed and likable light gun game that is made even more enjoyable thanks to some robust multiplayer options.

2 neue ign-Reviews zu bereits erhältlichen Spielen:

    NeoGeo

    Fatal Fury 2 - Fighting - 900 Points

    ign score: 7.5

    7.0 Presentation
A spinning globe before a fight, an arrogant cutscene filled with trash talk after –- standard stuff for an early ‘90s fighter.

    7.5 Graphics
Characters are larger and more expressive than in the first Fatal Fury, and the environments are more dynamic.

    7.5 Sound
The soundtrack is also enhanced over the original, with a few of the characters’ stage themes being especially well done.

    7.5 Gameplay
Dashing, dodging and the overall balance of the Fatal Fury fighting engine were all upgraded for this sequel...

    8.0 Lasting Appeal
...but the best addition is that Fatal Fury 2 actually has a fair amount of playable characters (eight) as compared to the replay-killing number in the original (three).

Samurai Shodown II - Fighting - keine Wertung *TOPHIT*
    http://www.vc-reviews.com/images/scr...1114/large.jpg
While many companies would have been content to only make a few minor upgrades here and there and call it a sequel, SNK ignored the "if it's not broke, don't fix it" approach and went all out for their follow-up to Samurai Shodown. The result is one of the best fighting games ever made, and easily the pinnacle of the outstanding Samurai Shodown series. If you love fighting games, this one should be at the top of your Virtual Console wish list. And even if you don't like fighting games, this one's so good it might just make a fighting game fan out of you yet. If you only own one Samurai Shodown title, make sure it's this one.

    Splatterhouse 2 - Fighting - keine Wertung
    http://www.vc-reviews.com/images/scr...1881/large.jpg
If you can look past the presentation issues, Splatterhouse 2 is still an enjoyable game and a worthy sequel. What you really should be looking forward to is Splatterhouse 3 however - This ditched the sidescroller formula and instead is an actual beat 'em up! It was not released in Europe, but due to the Import category on the Virtual Console we think this won't be an issue.

    Ecco Jr. - Simulation - 5.5
    http://www.vc-reviews.com/images/scr...5651/large.jpg
This kinder, gentler edition of Ecco the Dolphin's adventures is certainly more accessible in the early going. It's easier to get into compared to its predecessors, which might have been too challenging and intimidated players in the past. But beyond the initial ease of adjustment to the design, Ecco Jr. proves to offer little more – its lack of any sense of danger or urgency keeps it from being as engaging as the first Ecco game, or The Tides of Time, and it would be very hard to justify spending 800 Wii Points on this title over those two superior games. Ecco Jr. might still hold some appeal for younger players, who would benefit from the very same features that hardcore gamers would find to be at fault, so it could be considerable for you if you're a fan of the franchise and you have a young son, daughter, niece or nephew you'd like to introduce to Ecco's world. But beyond that possibility, stay well away from these shallow waters.

Pitstop II - Racing - keine Wertung
    http://www.vc-reviews.com/images/scr...6311/large.jpg
If you're a Commodore 64 fan that used to love playing the Pitstop titles, this is a game you should definitely consider taking for a spin again. It's simplistic approach to racing, coupled with the interesting use of the pit stop scenario, makes for a fun and unique racing experience that you just couldn't find on many game consoles or computers during this time period. That being said, racing game fans who've become spoiled by the extremely realistic approach of modern day racers might find this title a little too dumbed-down and basic for their tastes. It's clear that this game will definitely appeal more to those who grew up playing racing games from this era of gaming. Pitstop II proves that even these classic computer racing titles can still be a lot of fun to play, even all these years later.

Strong Bad's Cool Game Episode 1

    Adventure
    1000 Points
    ign Wertung: 8.1

A lot more care and effort has been put into Homestar Ruiner than most WiiWare offerings. It feels very much like a product of the Chapmans. As a point-and-click game it doesn't do anything groundbreaking, but all of the window dressing is fantastic. If you've never watched Homestar Runner, I would recommend checking out the web cartoons, first. Strong Bad's Cool Game is full of inside jokes and doesn't introduce newcomers to this wacky world. If you are already a fan, though, you've got yourself a must-download. It's a short experience and I'm tempted to say the $10 price tag is a bit much. The PC version is only $9. But if you download all five WiiWare episodes you'll have spent $50 for a full-length game, which is normal. I can't wait to see what Strong Bad has in store for us next.

    My Aquarium

    Simulation
    500 Points

No room for a real aquarium? Don’t have the time or money to maintain a fish tank? Why not add a beautiful, maintenance-free aquatic experience to your home with My Aquarium? Sit back, relax and interact with the fish. If you have to go away for a while, don’t worry; you might even find a brand new fish when you come back! In My Aquarium, Wii owners can choose the fish that will live in their aquarium and what decorations they’ll get to enjoy.

You can choose the glass color, lighting, background design, style of gravel, rocks, or plant life for the world their fish will inhabit and can mix and match different fish in up to 6 individual aquariums. You can even send aquariums to friends using WiiConnect24 if they also have My Aquarium.

Whether you're an rpg fan or not, you really owe it to yourself to give this legendary rpg classic a try. Who would have thought that putting Mario into a traditional rpg setting would end up working quite so well. As good as Super Mario RPG was back when it was first released, the game only seems to have gotten even better over time and is a true testament to what Square and Nintendo were able to accomplish with this absolutely amazing and timeless rpg classic.

Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels
    Jump'n Run
    ign-score: 8.5
    ! 600 Points !

    http://www.vc-reviews.com/images/scr...1231/large.jpg
A fairly popular trend on the Internet now is hacking old Mario games to make new levels, then challenging friends to try to beat the purposefully too-difficult designs. You can find videos of the subculture scattered on YouTube and similar sites, and watch as players try over and over to get through seemingly impossible side-scrolling challenges. Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels is a lot like that.

Compared to the Mario we Americans know and love, The Lost Levels feels a lot like a fan-made hack – with platforming challenges that are just a bit too frustrating and don't flow as well as Mario 1, and graphics that seem like a downgrade as well. But, odd as it is, this is the real, actual follow-up to Super Mario Bros. the way it was intended to be. A set of 52 extra levels, all made harder than any found in the first SMB, and all spiced up with just enough new elements to make it stand alone as its own separate game. It's absolutely worth 600 of your Wii Points to experience it, and Luigi's alternate controls, and the near-maddening new vision of the Mushroom Kingdom for the very first time. Just prepare yourself for repeated trips to the Game Over screen, because it turns out that NOA made the right choice after all, over 20 years ago, in holding this one back.

Critter Round-Up has its charms, but there's not quite enough here to justify the $10 price tag. If it were $5 I'd say this is a pleasant little download. The animals are cute, and the gameplay rests on some solid foundations put in place by Qix back in 1981. There just isn't enough of a challenge to keep the player engaged. Younger players might find it fascinating, but there are more robust WiiWare games for the rest of us.

Maboshi: The Three Shape Arcade (800 Points)
    Puzzle
    noch keine ign-Wertung

    http://www.wiiware-world.com/images/...0841/large.jpg
What is MaBoShi: The Three Shape Arcade? It’s one game but it’s also three. It’s simple to play, yet deceptively deep.

It's based on three basic shapes: circle, bar and square. There are three game windows, allowing three people to play different games at the same time, using only the A button or Control Pad. But there is a twist: each game can have an effect on the others.

In each game, the goal is the same – score a million points – but the challenge is different; whether you’re bashing enemies in Circle Mode, weaving your way through Bar Mode, or burning through a maze of obstacles in Square Mode.

MaBoShi: The Three Shape Arcade also features Mii characters, action replays that you can send to friends via WiiConnect24, and even a Nintendo DS download version for playing on the go!

    Spelunker NES
    Jump'n Run
    ign score: 2.5
    Achtung: 600 Points!

And it won't hold your interest long, either, making Spelunker a download that isn't really worth its asking price of 500 Wii Points at all. As a classic platformer from the early '80s, Spelunker certainly has some nostalgic value and will surely appeal to those gamers who played one of its original forms from 25 years ago. But newcomers to the experience would simply be frustrated by the control, which is nonsensically strict. It'll only take a handful of deaths coming about as a result of a five-pixel-tall vertical fall before you hit the Home Button to quit playing, and that earns Spelunker the dubious honor of joining Urban Champion, The Legend of Kage and Operation Wolf as one of the least desirable NES downloads on sale in the Wii Shop.

DoReMi Fantasy: Milon’s DokiDoki Adventure SNES

    ign score: 7.5
    Achtung 900 Points!

It seems like Hudson's little boy in blue just can't seem to star in an all-around accessible adventure – Milon's Secret Castle on the NES was confusing because of its abstract gameplay, and now Milon's DokiDoki Adventure from the Super Famicom is confusing because of its completely untranslated Japanese text. But don't let yourself be totally turned off by the fact, as DoReMi Fantasy: Milon's DokiDoki Adventure is still a solid, satisfying and simply fun 16-bit platformer even if it's not in English. The gameplay's always the most important aspect of a game, and this release won't burst your bubble there.

    Chase H.Q. TurboGrafx-16
    Arcade/Racing
    ign score: 4.5
    600 Points

So Chase H.Q., while built on a solid concept of hunting down escaping criminals in high speed pursuits, just ends up as an average game at best. It’s held back by its restrictive arcade timing, its often frustrating control and the fact that the whole thing can be played through in less than the time it takes to even get past the opening cutscenes in many other games. Oh well. At least the Turbo’s back. And we can put up with a game like this if it means that there’s a renewed chance of still seeing some of Hudson’s best past classics that haven’t yet come to the VC.

    Ys Book I & II TurboGrafx-16
    RPG
    ign score: 8.5
    Achtung: 800 Points!

Ys Book I & II is a bit of an odd beast, as it's an early '90s remake of two late '80s action RPGs now emulated on the Wii in 2008. And its core combat mechanic, in which you don't attack enemies so much as you just run straight into them, is sure to both baffle and amuse even the most hardcore of adventure gamers. But that undeniable uniqueness is just what makes a download of this 800 Wii Point package worth consideration. TurboGrafx fans have been clamoring for this game since the first TGCD titles starting appearing in the Wii Shop, and it's easy to see why it's held in such high regard. So give it a look, and prepare to make those random baddies take a taste of their own body-collision medicine.

IGN Review zu Super Mario RPG-Legend of the Seven Stars

    9.5 Presentation
Incredible. Fans were wary when it was first announced, but Mario's world translated beautifully into role-playing form. Great story, great characters, great game.

    9.0 Graphics
As one of the last SNES games to be published before the Nintendo 64 took over, Super Mario RPG took full advantage of the system's 16-bit technology and looks great.

    9.0 Sound
Beginning with the established themes from the Super Mario and Final Fantasy series and then blazing new territory on its own, Mario RPG's soundtrack is spectacular and a joy to listen to.

    9.0 Gameplay
Mario's platforming gameplay is translated here into a new perspective, and matched with an innovative, timing-based battle system. An excellent combination.

    10 Lasting Appeal
It's ridiculous how great a value this adventure is for only eight bucks. The quest will take you days, if not weeks, to complete -- and it's one you'll want to replay from the beginning.

    score:
    9.5 Incredible OVERALL

So it's absolutely undeniable that Super Mario RPG is worth its asking price of only 800 Wii Points, as it's a classic, deep, fun and cult-appealing installment in the Mario series that no Nintendo gamer should go without playing. Nintendo saved itself a winner to take the honor of the "250th Virtual Console Game" title, and you shouldn't hesistate to download it right away -- because in addition to getting yourself a great game for a great price, you'll also be showing further support for those other seemingly forgotten games that the fans are still crying out to see come to the VC.

If you don’t own an Xbox 360 and are a fan of Bomberman, you must have been slightly jealous for a while now. Bomberman Live, a downloadable title on the system, also features 8-player online Bomberman action. Your misery ends now, however, because Bomberman Blast captures mostly everything Bomberman Live has, and adds some excellent new content into the mix. It’s been a long time since we got some classic Bomberman action on a Nintendo console, but it’s back now, and possibly better than ever.

    http://www.wiiware-world.com/images/...1719/large.jpg
Midnight Pool isn't a genre-changing experience for the world of video billiards, but it is the best game of pool you can find anywhere on Wii, despite its internet flash game roots. This 800 point download offers IR menus, multiple game modes, two player hand-off play (Wii- mote only) and a pretty decent game of pool based around Wii IR, motion, and strong core gameplay. It isn't always pretty -- the characters are generic, and the VO is horrendous -- but it's still a solid choice if you find yourself with a few extra bucks while sitting in the Wii Shop Channel. In fact, we're pretty sure you won't find a better game of pool on Wii until the inevitable Wii MotionPlus revamps that are sure to follow in 09 and beyond, so as long as the odd visual style in Midnight Pool doesn't turn you off, you're in for a fun game of pool at an entirely fair price. If you're on the fence, search the net for the free flash version of the game first, or find a demo of the Midnight Pool 3D. Yes it's a remake of a web game, but like Defend Your Castle before it, Midnight Pool is still one worth playing.

So, on the whole, this little 8-bit, step-down conversion of SEGA’s flagship mascot platformer is just curious and unique enough to merit both your consideration for download, and taking up its own space alongside the original in Nintendo’s Wii Shop. It’s lucky to get that space, too -- because, if today’s been any indication, it doesn’t even matter if you’ve put out an official press release to reserve your spot.

All in all, Boulder Dash is not one of the better presented Commodore 64 titles so far released on the Virtual Console, and even a die-hard C64 fan like myself has to admit that the NES version would have been a more attractive prospect, but one can't deny the strength of the gameplay. Anyone who picks up the game will find themselves devoting hours to discovering the most efficient and impressive ways to complete the levels, and for that reason alone Boulder Dash is well worth the price of a download.

There's a reason that Jumpman has become such a beloved home computer classic from the 80's and it won't take you long to find out why that is. Sure, it's not as flashy as other games from the time period and the control can seem a bit unfair at times, but when you get past these few minor inconveniences and get to the heart of the game, you'll realize that it's got one of the most addictive qualities you'll ever come across in a classic computer title. It's safe to say that if you're a Jumpman fan, you'll find that the game is still just as much fun as it ever was. And if you've never played the game, now might be a good time to see why so many classic computer fans still hold this game in such high regard.

Mega Man 2 (VC/NES) ign Review (score: 9.5)

    8.5 Presentation
Mega Man 2's iconic intro sequence is still the stuff of NES legend, and paved the way for the even more dynamic storytelling scenes in later sequels.

    8.5 Graphics
A step up from the visuals of the original, Mega Man 2 began pushing the graphical power of the NES with enormous, impressive enemy characters (among other notable elements).

    10 Sound
The perfect NES soundtrack. Mega Man 2's music is essential listening for fans of the 8-bit era, and inspired continued greatness in later games' compositions.

    9.5 Gameplay
Mega Man at his most pure and focused. Though others may argue for the merits of the extra mechanics added in later games, this installment is crafted nearly perfectly.

    9.0 Lasting Appeal
As the only Mega Man game to offer two difficulty settings, there's incentive to play through at least twice right away. Later Mega Man titles were longer, though.

    9.5
    Incredible OVERALL

Capcom's intention with the upcoming Mega Man 9 is to mirror what made Mega Man 2 such a success -- and to emphasize the point, they've positioned this Virtual Console release of the game as a lead- in to the new title's WiiWare debut. The company's marketing tactics are sound here, as there's no better way to get yourself ready for Mega Man's next great adventure than by experiencing his greatest past quest. Let's also hope that strong sales of this, the first Mega Man that came to the VC last month and Mega Man 9 all together will encourage Capcom to continue to support Nintendo's retro download service with more of the Blue Bomber's past adventures -- because even though Mega Man 2 is the pinnacle, there are still several other spectacular sequels we'd love to revisit in Virtual Console form.

    http://www.wiiware-world.com/images/...2375/large.jpg
Mega Man 9 is exactly what hardcore gamers were hoping it would be, as Capcom has come out of the gate with a game that's full of nostalgia and fan service, but also one that truly does rival the best in the franchise's 8-bit roots. If you look at this game as a time warp into the NES era, it's one of the top titles out there, as it's hard as hell, somehow fresh in design (even though there have been well over 100 Mega Man games in 15 years), and simply a blast to rip through. If you weigh this one against other download titles out there though, the game will of course fall short in the graphical department (maybe the only game out there where a low graphics score is a compliment? ), the lack of innovation overall, or a lot of the modes or options you'd expect to get for your money. With that being said, Capcom did go the extra mile with online rankings, downloadable content, and a few extra areas to check out (time trials could last players a long, long time), and it makes Mega Man 9 a no-brainer download if you've got $10 to spare across any console.

There isn't anything wrong with rhythm games that get you out of your seat. Dance Dance Revolution and Rock Band are two examples that are more fun to play moving around than sitting on a couch. But rather than approximate real activity, Helix incorporates the same shallow motion controls so many other Wii games use to embarrass the user. The blah visuals and generic techno don't make struggling through it any easier. At $10, this is way overpriced. If casual rhythm games are your thing, there are better ones on the Wii.

If you're not a fan you're probably going to be lost -- which is why you should head over to the official website right now and start catching up. These games really stand out on WiiWare and they play nicely with just the remote. Earthworm Jim is a classic, and for a good reason - It was one of the first videogame series created outside Japan that became really popular. The game has a ton of style, it's a blast to play, and the graphics and music are still quite impressive. With all that's going on in Midnight Bowling I really wanted to like this game. Unfortunately the controls are a real gamebreaker; unless you've tossed away the pack-in disc you've already got a great bowling game that controls fantastically, so it's a tough sell convincing you to spend eight more dollars on a nicer looking but poorly playing version of the same sport.

As it stands Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition is a pretty impressive achievement considering the hardware it was produced for, but it’s nothing more than an interesting footnote in the Street Fighter lineage. The group battle option is neat and the fact that it includes both the Champion Edition and Hyper Fighting variants of the game is a bonus for completists, but we still can't recommend this entirely. If you’ve yet to download a Street Fighter II title on the Virtual Console then this is a solid option but otherwise save your points for something more worthwhile.

Fifteen years ago the magazine Commodore Format awarded the game a somewhat controversial review score of 100%. While not perfect, it is a shining example of what the C64 could accomplish over its lesser rivals (albeit having been vanquished by this point) and still stands the test of time today. It is the gaming equivalent of the bunny from Holy Grail; it might look cute and fluffy on the outside but underneath lies a vicious killer waiting to challenge all that take it on. Thankfully the journey itself is one to remember.

ign Review zu Secret of Mana (RPG, SNES, noch nicht in Europa für VC erschienen)
    score: 9.0

As with other well-regarded classic games that have come to the Virtual Console, it would be easy to continue to sing Secret of Mana's praises for many more pages -- there are many more reasons it's been named to the Top 100 Games of All Time, so many times, over the years. But the important point to make is that Secret of Mana is well worth your notice, and your investment of 800 Wii Points. For just eight bucks, you can rediscover (or experience for the first time) one of Squaresoft's most loved 16-bit SNES classics. And, better still, you can play it in an improved form -- it's easier to experience the incredible multiplayer capability of this game through its VC version than it ever was on the SNES. So grab two friends, put down your cash, and enjoy. You'll love finding out just what Mana's secret really is.

    9.5 Presentation
The innovative ring menu system makes item navigation unique. And, outside of the game, it's easier to access the game's multiplayer capability than ever before.

    8.5 Graphics
Secret of Mana's colorful characters and environments give it a look all its own, separate from Square's Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger.

    9.0 Sound
A marvelous soundtrack, perfectly representative of the excellence of Square's composers from the early '90s era.

    9.0 Gameplay
An action-RPG design that still stands out as unique and fun, even after 15 years. Its support for three players at once makes it a blast to play.

    9.5 Lasting Appeal

Tetris Party isn't a perfect game, but it is yet another must-have WiiWare title. For 1200 points and 244 blocks of Wii space, players can sink their teeth into a download that feels more like a packaged game, and less like WiiWare, with over a half dozen new modes to play, leaderboards for all of it, online battle, and a whole slew of options. If this were a $19.99 boxed title (or even a $29.99 one), we'd be recommending it, but mentioning that it's be a heck of a steal to get it on WiiWare. With that already being the case, gamers now have a package that's worth nearly double its price, and one that rivals things like World of Goo for your download space, cash, and attention. If you're a fan of traditional Tetris, this is the best console version we've seen in years. It's a must-own WiiWare game.

By all rights this should be at least a decent little download for anyone to enjoy, but the blatant lack of effort or care put forth by the developers has left us feeling swindled even at the low asking price. All told, The Incredible Maze is a tragic example of a developer’s intent to pollute the service with toxic gameplay masquerading as cheap entertainment. Avoid at all costs.

While some Simon's Quest fans might be a bit disappointed with the return to the standard Castlevania platforming experience, there's no denying how amazing Dracula's Curse truly is and just how well it carries on the tradition set by the original title. It's easy to see why so many Castlevania fans consider this to be the pinnacle of the series as Dracula's Curse is truly an amazing game from start to finish and a worthy addition to the Virtual Console service.

In our past reviews of "GNG" titles on the Virtual Console, we've praised Arthur's adventures as difficult, but addictively fun – which they are. Both Ghouls 'N Ghosts and Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts are solid games, and are definitely worth your consideration for download. But this installment, the original NES Ghosts 'N Goblins, is comparatively even more difficult and potentially frustrating, to the point where its value as a VC selection rests well below its sequels. So check out the 16-bit installments first and see how you like them. Then, if you truly enjoy the difficulty they offer and want an even more elevated level of challenge, come back to this first home console edition of the franchise and give it a go as well.

    Earthworm Jim Review (ign Review)

But you might be better off looking for the sequel to show up instead of diving into Earthworm Jim's underground world with this first release. Earthworm Jim 2 is a more solid experience on the gameplay side of things, while retaining the positive visual aspects of this original -- this first Earthworm Jim is pretty and likely to stir up nostalgia for many, but just doesn't handle well enough to really be a fun game to play. Invest your 800 Wii Points with caution, because your memories of Earthworm Jim as a character and cartoon hero might be making you think this first game adventure was better than it is.
    7.0 Presentation
Earthworm Jim, though clearly inspired by other animals-turned-hero like the Ninja Turtles, has a unique and comical appeal all his own.

    8.0 Graphics
Impressive animation, character design and environment work make the world of Earthworm Jim come alive. Particularly impressive in 1994, when it first arrived.

    8.0 Sound
A soundtrack that has just as much of a sense of humor as the rest of the package. There are even some quick voice clips giving Jim a bit more personality.

    6.0 Gameplay
Where the game lets you down is in its imprecise control. Handling Jim's movements and attacks feels sloppy, and you find yourself fighting against him instead of as him.

    7.0 Lasting Appeal
You may be inspired to look up some old level-skip cheat codes to jump past some of the more repetitive parts, but the variety of the game's many levels makes them all worth seeing.

The origins of the game lie with the original classic arcade game Space Invaders of course. However, Space Invaders Get Even puts a twist on the formula by letting the player control the space invaders themselves!

Unlike the original game and its spin-offs, Space Invaders Get Even sees players piloting the UFO across a landscape rendered in 3D graphics, which encompasses areas such as cities, forests, oceans and military bases. Players move the UFO with the Nunchuk, and then use the pointer function of the Wiimote to direct a swarm of up to 100 invaders in blowing up buildings and destroying the defending forces of Earth.

The invaders, which are rendered as flat, glowing two dimensional sprites which resemble the invaders in the original game, are split into three types, each with different attributes.Upon eliminating all opposition in the stage, the player must then take on a large boss, which include a giant tank and a huge battleship.

You can connect online with friends, region players, or worldwide and play four-player vs. ball, and the promise of additional downloadable content in the form of extra stages (the game is a little too short now) and action abilities could open up the package substantially. While story mode is a bit simple, the animation and overall visual presentation the game is pretty impressive overall, and at the end of the day, the game is fun enough to warrant an 800 point purchase if you're into pinball, or were a fan of the older Alien Crush/Devil's Crush games. It isn't perfect, but it's certainly a fun game to play between lengthier, full-fledged Wii titles. Hopefully the downloadable content delivers, as it could really flesh out a package that is -in its current state - fun, but shallow.

Oh, and as a message to Hudson, we'd have no problem paying $50 for a gigantic space epic Alien Crush with dozens of stages, extra modes, local multiplayer, and a more fleshed out "guilty pleasure" story. Alien Crush Returns is fun. Now we want more.

Mega Man 3 (NES, 500 Points)
    Action
    9.5

    http://www.vc-reviews.com/images/scr...3918/large.jpg
As with Mega Man 2, it would be easy to go on and on singing the praises of Mega Man's third NES adventure. But just as with that game, I'll cut to the point -- Mega Man 3 is an excellent, fully featured and incredibly enjoyable action experience from the NES that is absolutely worth your investment of 500 Wii Points. To this day, fans of the franchise debate whether or not 2 or 3 is the best in the series -- to me, the point is moot. Both are incredible, and both can be owned for a combined total of just ten bucks. You should download both.

But it is important to assert that Mega Man 3 fully deserves the praise that fans continue to offer it to this day. Series creator Keiji Inafune seems to have recently taken a stance against the game, regretting some of its innovations -- the new Mega Man 9 was intentionally created in the style of 1 and 2 for example, leaving out mechanics like the slide technique first seen here. But though it is true that several of the later Mega Man sequels were just quick, cookie-cutter cash-ins, the franchise had not yet sunk to those depths by 1990. Mega Man 3 is excellent, the endless debate over whether it or 2 is the best sequel is a valid one, and you should spend the digital cash to jump into the experience and discover its quality for yourself. Mr. Inafune, I respectfully disagree with any reservations you have about this title. It rocks, and its arrival on the Virtual Console makes it still a good time to be a fan of Mega Man.

It's great to see Sega, after taking a slightly experimental direction with Phantasy Star III, return the series to prosperity with what they were able to accomplish with Phantasy Star IV. You honestly couldn't ask for a better ending to the 16-bit series than the one found here. As outstanding as the series has been over the years, Phantasy Star IV really took it to new heights and still stands as one of the true rpg greats of the 16-bit era and a game that's as much fun to play through now as it was back then. Phantasy Star IV is yet another outstanding addition to the Virtual Console and a game that no true rpg enthusiast should pass up.

Art Style: Cubello - 600 WiiPoints
    Puzzle
    7.7

Cubello is a pretty impressive product, and a game that embraces the idea of WiiWare entirely. It's one entertaining core concept, and it's done with simplicity and polish. The game isn't much of a looker -- even Orbient is better looking -- but the presentation is slick, despite being devoid of more modes or options. Even the audio, which is done with robotic VO that keeps the chatter up every time you get bonus time unlocked or blow off a set of cubes is decent, but can get a bit annoying after a while. We played this one in our office at a regular level, and our co-workers wanted to kill us before a single match was done; these are people that hear Wii games all day, every day, mind you. Still, despite all the quirks and oddities that come with Cubello, there's also a simple charm that makes it really fun, and a great little download. At 600 points, and only 47 blocks (that's less than most Super NES games), this is a simple, entertaining little title that can -- and should -- fit perfectly in your packed fridge.

Cue Sports: Snooker Vs. Billards - 800 WiiPoints

    http://www.wiiware-world.com/images/...4157/large.jpg
Cue Sports: Snooker vs Billiards is the perfect WiiWare pool game for experts and newcomers alike. Featuring realistic controls in which players use the Wii Remote just like an actual cue, the game lets anyone try their hand at pool in the comfort of their living rooms. If you’re not ready to use an “actual” pool cue, you can set the strength of the shot using the buttons on the controller.

Players can choose from the most popular variants of pool, including eight ball, nine ball, rotation, and snooker. Players can try their hands at trick shots too, or even set up their own! Once they feel like true pool sharks, they can go online to play with up to four players in a Wi-Fi Matchup.

Strong Bad Episode 3: Baddest of the Bands - 1.000 WiiPoints
    Adventure
    8.4

Baddest of the Bands offers around five hours of more humorous pointing and clicking for fans of Homestar Runner. If you're not a fan you're probably going to be lost -- which is why you should head over to the official website right now and start catching up. These games really stand out on WiiWare and they play nicely with just the Wii Remote. The puzzles keep getting better with each episode. Here's hoping gamers can find room on their Wii for Strong Bad's latest.

    !Finger weg!
Yummy Yummy Cooking Jam - 1.000 WiiPoints
    Action
    3.0

    http://www.wiiware-world.com/images/...4125/large.jpg
Yummy Yummy Cooking Jam is so repetitive that repetition even affects the name of the game. It's the kind of simple, basic, pointing and clicking game design that you might allow to amuse you for a while as a free browser game on the internet, but not nearly robust or interesting enough to actually spend 10 dollars to own for your Wii. Keep those Wii Points saved for more worthwhile experiences, or else put those same dollars towards Order Up! or Cooking Mama -- two customer service sims that are much more deserving.
