'Splosion Man Review
Twisted Pixel is back to blow your mind.
by Daemon Hatfield
US, July 17, 2009 - Twisted Pixel got off to a great start earlier this year with The Maw, a modest but fun platformer with great visuals and sound. The team has upped the ante with its second offering, 'Splosion Man. This is one heck of a puzzle platformer, and quite an achievement for such a young developer. As soon as you start playing, you'll understand why Microsoft chose to feature this in its second Summer of Arcade. 'Splosion Man misses no opportunity to delight the player, and it's bursting with humor and personality.

A secret experiment has gone horribly wrong and you have been imbued with explosive powers. The disaster also affected your mind, leaving you a little…off. Now you must escape the underground laboratory by using your unique ability to detonate yourself. Your fellow scientists will try and stop you with a variety of traps and robots, but now that you are no longer a mere mortal they will flee in terror if you can get close enough. Exploding near a scientist will cause them to hemorrhage neatly packaged deli meats, a sight that never gets old. It's one of my favorite things I've seen in a videogame this year.

The camera often zooms in to give you a dynamic view of the action. You can explode three times in a row, after which you must wait a brief moment to recharge. Exploding launches yourself into the air, so you effectively have a triple jump. You can bounce from wall to wall, and a lot of the game's mechanics revolve around wall jumping Controls are dead simple: you move with the left analog stick and all four face buttons cause you to explode. This is essentially a platformer, as you spend the entire time running and jumping. But you'll have to do some thinking to figure out a way past the game's many challenges, adding a heavy puzzle element to 'Splosion Man. Not every obstacle is a test of wits -- many are old-fashioned platforming tests of reflexes and skill. If you're a fan of N+, definitely check this one out. The core mechanics are similar, but 'Splosion Man takes the idea much farther and expands upon it.

You'll be scored in each level for how many scientists you butcher, how quickly you finish, and how many secret cakes you find ('Splosion Man loves cake). This game was made for speed runs, and you'll be given a par time to shoot for in every stage.

The going gets devilishly challenging, but the impediments are so inventive it never stops being fun. 'Splosion Man is constantly throwing new ideas at the player and introducing new mechanics. Even though you only ever move on a 2D plane, the camera is dynamic and will zoom in and out, even around our hero so that your perspective is constantly changing. If you do get stuck, and you die enough times, the game will give you the option of taking the "Way of the Coward" and skipping to the next level. If you do, though, you'll receive a terrible score for that stage and have to wear a ballerina tutu until you complete the next area.

Beyond the lengthy single-player game is a cooperative multiplayer experience with its own levels. Up to four 'Splosion Men can work together to overcome challenges both locally and online. You can team up and explode at the same time to launch yourselves even farther than normal. It takes a lot of coordination, but pulling the left trigger will bring up a handy onscreen countdown you can use to time yourselves.

This is a polished package and everything has been given some TLC. 'Splosion Man himself is charming, from his idle animations to his insane babbling. The game has a great sense of humor and makes references to everything from action films to cheesy '80s songs (the achievement for beating the game is called "You're the Best Around!"). Browsing menu options creates sci-fi sound effects that fit in with the soundtrack. Even pausing the game is slick, as the camera pans out to reveal a scientist monitoring your performance. Occasionally a background or a loading screen will border on amateurish, but you can see the attention to detail in almost every aspect of the game.

Closing Comments
With The Maw and now 'Splosion Man, Twisted Pixel has emerged just this year as one of the best indie developers feeding content onto Xbox Live Arcade. 'Splosion Man is bursting with humor, personality, and classic platforming challenges. Not a moment goes by without seeing something new and exciting and 'Splosion Man himself is one of the most endearing new videogame characters of the year. Twisted Pixel clearly had fun creating this insane game, and you'll have fun playing it. For all of man's vast intelligence, we're still just bags of meat. 'Splosion Man lets us revert to something primal and barbaric, and detonate our intellectual side.
